Kenya’s preparations to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has encountered another hitch after Confederations of African football CAF disapproved the new grass planted at the Moi international sports center Kasarani turf. The African football governing body citied concerns over its quality and suitability ahead of the big tournaments.

CAF has instructed Sports stadia to uproot the newly planted grass, which reportedly cost millions, and replace it with a new type as recommended by the continental football body in preparation for next year’s CHAN. Kasarani and Nyayo stadium has been closed for renovations since last year, with the upgrades intended for both CHAN and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. According to CAF Kasarani needed a new turf, roofing face lift, washrooms, media center and among other major renovations.

The project was initially overseen by former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, and his successor, Kipchumba Murkomen, has pledged to complete the stadium by the stipulated deadline of November. However, both stadias have been lagging behind with contractors exchanging goal posts every time the deadline is due. Efforts to reach Sports Kenya on the same proved futile as their phones went unanswered. Turf expert, says top footballing nations in Africa use the durable perennial ryegrass, for their pitches due to it’s fast quickly growth and durability. It's is also commonly used both in the US and the UK. Meanwhile, Pemba grass, Buffalo grass, st. Augustin grass and paspalum Kikuyu grass, are also fifa and CAF approved.

The setback comes less than a month after CAF President Patrice Motsepe, toured Kasrani, Nyayo stadiumaand Talanta City, alongside sports CS Murkomen. Murkomen expressed confidence that the facility would be ready within two months, an assurance that not only ensures Kenya is prepared for continental competitions and alleviate venue issues for Harambee Stars and FKF Premier League teams. " Kasarani stadium, as I promised, will be delivered before December to ensure it's ready for CHAN preparations," Murkomen said. "As you can see, every effort is being made to get the stadium ready. We, as East Africa and Kenya, will support CAF to ensure the tournament's success."

Motsepe , was impressed by the initial progress in the stadia but raided the red flag on the Kasarani turf, urging the contractors to do better before December, when he returns for further inspection. Kenya alongside Uganda and Tanzania is scheduled to host the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) next year from February 1-28. Two years later, the three countries will host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals under the East Africa “pamoja umbrella” umbrella. .
