Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured Tharaka Nithi and Meru county residents that the government is committed to constructing Nithi Bridge, a critical section connecting Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties, as earlier promised.
Kindiki asked residents to avoid unnecessary protests on the same saying Sh7billion had already been allocated and the contractor will be on site soon.
"I want to ask a few rogue politicians inciting people to protests over the bridge to stop this, as it is not of any importance. Take it from me that the government is committed to fulfilling its promise, and so far, we have the money to do this," he said.
The DP added that currently, public participation is ongoing to pave the way for compensation of people whose lands will be affected, after which the contractor will kick off his work.
The other setback, the DP added, was lack of a constituted National Lands Commission, but this is now water under the bridge after the commissioners were sworn in recently.
"We will now start compensation, and this will be a great progress towards the implementation of this project," Kindiki said.
He urged the residents to be patient, promising that the project will be completed before the next elections.
"We promised to construct the bridge, and we are not fools to go against this. We will prove the naysayers wrong once the project is complete," he said.
At the same time, Kindiki said the expansion of the Makutano-Mwea-Chuka-Nkubu-Meru-Maua highway to a dual carriageway will also be executed as planned.
The government will start setting aside money for this project by the end of the year, he added.
