A suspected gang leader was fatally shot while four of his accomplices fled during a daring confrontation with police in Shauri Yako area, Linjoka sub-location, Igembe North, Meru County.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 21 March 2026, at around 2 am.
A joint patrol team from Laare Police Station, comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), was on routine duty when they encountered a group of about five individuals reported to be behaving suspiciously.
"Upon being lawfully challenged, the suspects opened fire, narrowly missing the officers. Acting in defence of life and public safety, the officers returned fire."
"In the intense exchange that followed, one suspect was fatally neutralised; shot in the head while the remaining four fled into the darkness, still armed and dangerous," the statement read.
At the scene, police recovered a pistol loaded with three live rounds and one spent cartridge.
The firearm, officers said, could have been used to commit violent crimes across the sub-county, putting ordinary citizens at risk.
The deceased has been identified by authorities as the alleged leader of a criminal gang reportedly linked to a series of violent incidents in the area, which have caused fear and insecurity among local residents.
"His body has been removed to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital mortuary, preserved pending post-mortem examination," the agency said.
The DCI emphasised that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and prevent any further criminal activities.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.
In a statement, the DCI hailed the conduct of the officers involved in the operation.
"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations stands resolute: criminal elements will find no sanctuary. We salute the bravery of our officers who risked everything to protect communities and deliver swift justice," the statement concluded.
The incident comes against the backdrop of an arrest made on a suspected gang leader in Nakuru, in a development authorities say is part of broader efforts to combat organised crime and enhance public safety.
According to the National Police Service, officers from Kaptembwo Police Station were conducting routine patrols earlier today when they received intelligence indicating the suspect’s presence in the Gioto area of London, Nakuru.
The individual is believed to have been involved in multiple robbery with violence incidents and had been in hiding after evading a previous police operation.
A targeted operation was launched, resulting in the suspect’s arrest.
During the arrest, officers recovered a dagger from the individual. He was taken into custody without incident.
Following the initial arrest, the suspect led police to a makeshift residence, where a thorough search was conducted.
Officers discovered a homemade pistol concealed inside a blue canvas bag.
All recovered items have been secured, and investigations are ongoing ahead of the suspect’s scheduled arraignment in court.
