The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has formally declared the Emurua Dikirr parliamentary seat vacant following the death of area MP Joshua Kipyegon Ng’eno.
In a gazette notice dated March 10, 2026, Speaker Wetang’ula said the vacancy arises under constitutional and legal provisions governing parliamentary representation.
“It is notified for general information of the public that the seat of the Member of the National Assembly for Emurua Dikirr Constituency elected under Article 97 (1) (a) of the Constitution has become vacant as a result of the death of Hon. Joshua Kipyegon Ng’eno, on the 28th February, 2026,” the notice reads.
The declaration is made pursuant to Articles 101 (4) (a) and 103 (1) (a) of the Constitution, as well as section 16 (3) of the Elections Act, 2011.
The gazette notice effectively sets in motion the process of filling the vacancy through a by-election, as required by law.
Earlier, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) scheduled the by-election for May 14, 2026, paving the way for voters in the Narok County constituency to elect a new representative.
The by-election will see more than 45,000 registered voters return to the ballot to choose their next Member of Parliament.
According to an earlier notice, the electoral body outlined key timelines for political parties and independent candidates seeking to participate in the exercise.
“Each political party intending to participate in the by-elections shall submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before Wednesday, March 25, 2026,” the IEBC stated.
It added: “Candidates intending to participate in the by-elections as independent candidates shall submit their names and symbols that they intend to use during the by-elections for purposes of nomination of independent candidates to the commission on or before Wednesday, March 25, 2026.”
Wetang’ula’s communication formally triggered the electoral process after issuing the writs, enabling the IEBC to proceed with preparations for the mini-poll.
The by-election is expected to attract political interest as parties seek to secure control of the seat left vacant following Ng’eno’s death.
