A strong field of 145 golfers, including 15 juniors, is expected to compete over the three-day championship in what promises to be one of the most competitive stops on the national amateur circuit.
Fresh from his victory at the fourth leg—the Windsor Classic—Jay Sandhu will be among the players to watch. Sandhu returns to his home course at Muthaiga, aiming to build on his recent triumph and maintain his push up the series standings.
Junior golfers are also expected to make a strong statement following impressive performances at Windsor. Kanana Muthomi emerged as one of the standout performers last weekend, finishing third overall on three-over-par 219—an indication of the growing impact of juniors on the amateur scene.
The tournament comes at a crucial stage in the season, with players not only battling for the title but also for valuable ranking points as the race for overall honours gathers momentum.
Junaid Manji currently leads the standings with 334 points, having won the opening leg at Sigona Golf Club and secured a fifth-place finish at Windsor. Sandhu sits second, with Rafael Leming’ani in third, setting up a tightly contested leaderboard heading into the Muthaiga showdown.
Beyond the main event, the weekend will also shine a spotlight on youth development through two Junior Golf Foundation Kenya events.
The NCBA Interschool tournament will be held today at Windsor, bringing together school-going players in a competitive format designed to nurture emerging talent.
This will be followed by the NCBA US Kids Golf Spring Local Tour – Nairobi at Karen Country Club on Saturday, where boys and girls will compete across different age categories.
NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to growing the sport. “Through our continued support for amateur and junior tournaments such as the Muthaiga Open and the Junior Golf Foundation events this weekend, we remain committed to nurturing talent and strengthening the growth of golf in Kenya. It is encouraging to see increasing participation from both elite amateurs and juniors, which speaks to the bright future of the sport,” he said.
With elite amateurs and rising juniors sharing the stage, the NCBA Muthaiga Open is set to deliver high-quality competition while reinforcing its role as a key pillar in the development of golf in Kenya.
