President William Ruto stepped up his development agenda in Western Kenya, commissioning and inspecting a series of projects aimed at transforming livelihoods, boosting trade, and expanding access to affordable housing across the region.

During his tour, the Head of State unveiled several key initiatives spanning Busia, Vihiga, and Kakamega counties, underscoring his administration’s focus on inclusive growth and grassroots economic empowerment.

Among the flagship projects is the Budalangi ESP Market, a modern trading facility designed to provide organised spaces and improved working conditions for local traders. The market is expected to enhance small-scale commerce and offer a more structured environment for business operations in the area.

In Busia County, the President also launched the Nasewa Industrial Park Affordable Housing Project, a large-scale development comprising 2,000 housing units spread across 21 blocks.

The project is supported by critical social amenities, including a Level 3 hospital, primary and early childhood development schools, a shopping center, community hall, police post, chief’s camp, sports fields, and waste management infrastructure.

The integrated approach is expected to create a self-sustaining community while generating employment opportunities during and after construction.

Further boosting trade infrastructure, Ruto commissioned the Malaha County Strategic Market, a major commercial hub with 750 stalls and additional space for 375 external traders. The facility is designed to accommodate more than 6,000 buyers, positioning it as a key driver of local and regional trade.

In Vihiga County, the President launched the Vihiga Estate Affordable Housing Project, which consists of 220 housing units across nine blocks.

The development includes a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units, supported by essential infrastructure such as access roads, drainage systems, sewer networks, and water storage facilities. Additional amenities include a perimeter wall, gatehouse, and waste management systems, ensuring a secure and well-serviced living environment.

Ruto also inspected the ongoing Funyula Estate project, which features 955 residential units catering to different income levels, including social, affordable, and market-rate housing. The estate is equipped with green spaces, children’s play areas, cabro-paved driveways, and on-site commercial shops, reflecting a modern, community-centered design.

In Kakamega County, the President highlighted progress on the Milimani Estate Phase One project, part of a nationwide housing initiative targeting at least 220 units in every constituency. The program adopts a rent-to-own model, allowing Kenyans to gradually transition from tenants to homeowners.

Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome said the projects reflect the government’s broader vision of economic transformation.

“These projects demonstrate the Government’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities, empowering traders, and improving the quality of life for our people,” she said.

The housing programme, alongside market and infrastructure investments, is also expected to create jobs for local youth and stimulate small businesses through construction supply chains, reinforcing the government’s promise of shared prosperity.
