Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) recorded Sh18.08 billion in total revenue last year, marking a significant financial performance despite a slight dip in cargo earnings.
Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reveals that while freight remained the primary revenue driver, the passenger service experienced a notable surge in collections.
Freight revenue reached Sh13.98 billion in 2024, down from Sh14.69 billion recorded in 2023.
This marginal decline follows a period of steady growth since 2020, when cargo earnings dipped to Sh10.46 billion during global supply chain disruptions.
In contrast, passenger revenue hit a record high of Sh4.1 billion last year.
This represents a substantial increase from the Sh2.94 billion earned in 2023 and more than doubles the Sh1.72 billion collected in 2019.
The consistent year-on-year growth in passenger earnings suggests rising demand for rail travel, even as the cargo sector navigates a more volatile economic landscape.
