Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has promised to help families affected by recent flooding by clearing mortuary bills and covering burial expenses for the victims.

Sonko made the announcement while criticising the current Johnson Sakaja administration over what he described as a failure to adequately respond to the situation.

Heavy rains in recent days have caused devastating floods in several parts of Nairobi, leaving destruction in homes, businesses, and, unfortunately, claiming lives.

Sonko’s Promise to Families

Speaking about the tragedy, Sonko said he would personally step in to help families struggling with burial expenses following the flood disaster.

“I will clear mortuary bills, I'll pay for their coffins, and I will transport them to their respective places,” Sonko said.

The former governor noted that many affected families may not have the financial capacity to handle the sudden burial costs, especially after losing loved ones during the floods.

His pledge has drawn attention online, with many Kenyans sharing the statement widely across social media platforms.

Criticism of City Leadership

While making the pledge, Sonko also criticised Nairobi’s current leadership, arguing that more should have been done to prevent the devastating effects of flooding.

He particularly took aim at Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing the county administration of failing to address recurring drainage problems that often lead to flooding during heavy rains.

The remarks have sparked political debate online, with supporters and critics weighing in on the situation.

Flood Impact in Nairobi

Recent heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across various neighbourhoods in Nairobi. Several low-lying areas have experienced rising water levels, forcing residents to evacuate their homes and businesses.

Flooding has also disrupted transport in some parts of the city, while emergency teams continue responding to affected areas.

Tragically, some families have lost loved ones in incidents related to the floods, leaving them to deal with both emotional and financial burdens.

Mixed Reactions Online

Sonko’s pledge has triggered mixed reactions on social media. Some Kenyans have praised the former governor for stepping forward to support affected families during a difficult time.

Others have used the moment to highlight the broader problem of flooding in Nairobi and the need for long-term solutions.
