President William Ruto on Friday hosted an Iftar dinner at State House, Mombasa.

The event brought together Muslim leaders and government officials for the traditional evening meal that marks the breaking of the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Among those present were ODM leader Oburu Oginga, Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, among other leaders.

The gathering comes as Muslims across the country and the world observe Ramadan, a sacred month in the Islamic calendar dedicated to fasting, prayer, reflection and acts of charity.

Iftar is the meal Muslims take at sunset to break their fast after abstaining from food and drink from dawn.

The fast begins at daybreak and ends at sunset, when families and communities gather to share meals and prayers.

Traditionally, the fast is broken with dates and water, following the practice of the Prophet Muhammad, before a larger meal is served.

Beyond the meal, Iftar is also seen as a time of unity, generosity and community bonding. It is common for families, friends and institutions to host communal dinners during Ramadan, often inviting guests from different backgrounds as a sign of goodwill and solidarity.

State-hosted Iftar dinners have become a regular feature during Ramadan, bringing together leaders and members of the Muslim community to mark the occasion.
