Fortune Sacco players celebrate during a recent match against Kabati Youth/HANDOUTFortune Sacco FC coach Vincent Nyaberi insists his side remain firmly in the hunt for promotion from the National Super League despite sitting sixth on the table.
Nyaberi said his team still has a realistic chance of finishing in the top three by the end of the season. Fortune Sacco revived their campaign on Saturday when they ended a three-match winless run with a commanding victory over newcomers Kabati Youth FC at St Sebastian Park.
The Murang’a-based side are currently sixth on the standings with 36 points from 23 matches. “Any team with 36 points and above has a chance of qualifying for the top-tier league. It’s too early to say it’s a three-horse race,” Nyaberi said.
“With 15 games to go, I believe we are still in the race. Our huge win against Kabati Youth is a strong statement. We needed this win because we had gone three games without a victory. This restores our confidence and gives us new momentum in our upcoming matches.”
Looking ahead to their weekend fixture against struggling Luanda Villa FC, Nyaberi said the team is targeting maximum points in their three matches scheduled for March.
“Our games against Luanda Villa, log leaders Mombasa United FC and 3K FC are must-win matches. Mombasa United and 3K are ahead of us, and we must halt their run. These are the games that will determine our season,” he said.
Nyaberi also welcomed the addition of experienced central defender Brian Marvin, who joined the club from Mully Children’s Family FC (MCF). “I’m happy to have him in the team.
He is an experienced player, having played for Murang’a Seal FC and Shabana FC. His experience and leadership will come in handy in our promotion push,” he added.
However, Nyaberi admitted the team suffered a setback after two players who had joined during the mid-season transfer window returned to MCF after the club was reinstated to the league.
The Ndalani-based side had initially withdrawn from the competition, citing financial challenges, but later resumed participation. John Okoth and Victor Ochieng both returned to MCF, a move Nyaberi described as unfortunate for his squad.
Nyaberi also declined to comment on the suspension of his assistant coach, Alpha Muchiri. “That decision was made by the board of management. I don’t want to be drawn into that, please,” he said.
