Safari Rally in Naivasha.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory ahead of the Safari Rally Kenya, warning motorists to expect heavy traffic and directing truck drivers not to park along undesignated sections of highways during the event.

In a statement, KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli said the advisory will be in effect from March 12 to March 15, when thousands of rally fans are expected to travel to different viewing points, particularly around Naivasha and Nakuru.

“The Authority advises all truck drivers not to park at any undesignated locations on the highway, as violation of this directive shall lead to immediate arrest,” Kimeli said.

To help ease congestion, the authority outlined several alternative routes for motorists travelling from Nairobi towards rally zones in the Rift Valley region.

Among them is the Scenic Route, which runs through Rironi, Flyover (Magumu), Njambini, Ol Kalou, Dundori and Lanet.

Motorists can also use the Adventure Route, travelling from Nairobi through Rironi, Naivasha, Engineer, Ol Kalou, Dundori and Lanet.

Other alternatives include the Thika Trail, which runs from Nairobi through Thika and Magumu before joining Ol Kalou and Dundori, as well as the Suswa Shortcut connecting Nairobi through Ngong, Suswa, Narok and Nakuru.

KeNHA said the advisory is meant to reduce congestion and enhance safety along major highways leading to rally routes.

“The Authority continues to ensure your safety on all our highways,” Kimeli added.

The Safari Rally, part of the World Rally Championship, is one of Kenya’s biggest motorsport events and attracts thousands of local and international spectators each year.
