Kenya has introduced an automated instant traffic fines system targeting minor road offences in a move aimed at improving road safety and transparency in enforcement, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Under the system, motorists who violate traffic rules receive an SMS notification detailing the offence committed and the amount payable.
The fines range from Sh500 to Sh10,000 depending on the nature of the violation.
Among the highest penalties is Sh10,000 for offences such as driving without number plates, operating a vehicle without a valid inspection certificate, causing obstruction on the road or exceeding the speed limit by 16–20 kilometres per hour.
Drivers may be fined Sh5,000 for offences including driving on pavements or failing to stop when directed by a police officer.
Ignoring traffic signs attracts a Sh3,000 penalty, while using a mobile phone while driving carries a Sh2,000 fine.
Other violations include failure to produce a driving licence, fined at Sh1,000, and not wearing a seat belt, which attracts a Sh500 penalty.
Motorists are required to pay the fines within seven days to avoid additional penalties.
