Police in Meru county are investigating the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man who was injured during a political rally in Buuri West subcounty.

Eric Mwenda was shot in the forehead on March 8 at around 3.30 pm at Ntirimiti centre during a fracas that reportedly erupted at a stopover rally organised by the United Opposition.

It is believed police fired the killer shot in the drama that broke out.

The victim was rushed to St Teresa’s Kiirua Mission Hospital where he was admitted in a critical condition. 

However, on the morning of March 9 at around 5.00 am, the family received a call from a neurosurgeon at the hospital confirming that Mwenda had succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. 

Police visited the scene of the alleged shooting and the hospital and confirmed that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound on the forehead.

Investigators recovered a spent 9mm cartridge at the scene. 

Police say the area has since been secured and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify the person responsible.

This is the latest such incident to happen amid concerns of police abuses at large and on opposition figures.

Elsewhere, police in Kakamega county have launched investigations into a suspected murder after a 54-year-old woman.

Leonida Kakai was allegedly assaulted by her husband in Kabras East subcounty on March 8.

The woman identified as Leonida Kakai, had allegedly been beaten by her husband on March 8. 

Police said she reportedly sought refuge at a neighbour’s house at night but the following morning, while returning home accompanied by her granddaughter, she suddenly collapsed along the way. 

Kakai was rushed to Chomoi Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. 

Police visited the scene and moved the body to the Chomoi Hospital mortuary where it is awaiting a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, a mob set on fire two motorcycles belonging to suspected thieves who had stolen a cow and slaughtered it in Kinangop, Nyandarua county.

The mob traced the suspected thieves to a thicket where they had slaughtered the cow valued at Sh150,000 and started to share the meat.

Police said the suspects escaped leaving the carcass and two motorcycles, which were set ablaze by irate members of the public. Police later visited the scene and announced they were pursuing the suspects.
