“The fight against gender-based violence remains a key priority of my administration,”Governor Julius Malombe said, highlighting the concern the issue continues to raise among county leadership.
Malombe said that construction of a GBV rescue centre at Ikutha Level 4 Hospital, with a capacity to accommodate up to 60 survivors, is in its final stages.
“We expect the facility to be completed within this financial year, and it will be officially launched early in the next financial year,” he said, describing the project as a critical step in supporting survivors.
“Survivors require safe spaces where they can seek refuge and protection after reporting cases, particularly in situations involving minors or intimate partners.”
The governor spoke on Monday at Nyuani Primary School, where he led residents in commemorating International Women’s Day.
During the event, Malombe praised women for their pivotal role in building families, strengthening communities and driving economic growth in the county.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to empowering women through improved access to education, healthcare, leadership opportunities and economic empowerment programmes.
“As your governor, I assure you that the county government of Kitui remains steadfast in promoting policies and initiatives that advance the well-being of women and girls,” he said.
“True empowerment begins with access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities,” Malombe added.
Referring to the day’s theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ the governor said it serves as a reminder that progress comes from sharing time, knowledge, resources and support.
“It teaches us that when we give, we do not lose—we multiply. When women thrive, families prosper, communities grow stronger and nations rise.”
Malombe said that empowering women and giving them opportunities ultimately builds stronger families and societies.
“When we give women access to capital and skills, we gain a stronger economy. When we give women space in leadership, we gain better governance,” the county chief added.
The governor commended women across the county for positively impacting farming, markets, enterprise and community leadership.
He added that to fully realise the spirit of the ‘Give to Gain’ theme, women must have expanded access to land, credit, training, markets, and decision-making spaces.
“In doing so, we will build a more prosperous, resilient, and united county.”
