Mudavadi further urged the National Transport and Safety Authority and traffic police to intensify enforcement and remove unroadworthy vehicles from the roads.

“The National Transport and Safety Authority, working closely with traffic police, must also intensify enforcement to remove unroadworthy vehicles from our roads and hold those responsible accountable,” he said.

The accident occurred on Monday night at the Malaha area along the Webuye–Kitale road and involved two motorcycles and a trailer.

Police said the crash happened at around 9.45 pm when a motorcycle travelling from Webuye towards Kitale collided head-on with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

Both riders were reportedly not wearing helmets and died on the spot due to the impact.

Moments later, as members of the public gathered at the scene to assist the victims, a Mercedes-Benz trailer travelling from Kitale towards Webuye lost control and rammed into the crowd.

Police said the trailer ran over several pedestrians at the accident scene, killing 10 people instantly and leaving many others seriously injured.

The injured were rushed to Webuye Sub-County Hospital for treatment, where four more victims later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to 15.

Authorities said 16 people remain admitted at the facility with severe injuries.

Road accidents remain a major public safety concern in Kenya as police olice data shows close to 5,000 people were killed in separate crashes across the country in 2025.

Police officers visited the scene and moved the bodies of the deceased to Webuye Sub-County Hospital mortuary as investigations into the accident continue.
