Kenya has rolled out an automated instant traffic fines system aimed at improving road safety and enforcing traffic laws more efficiently.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the system detects traffic violations using smart road surveillance cameras installed on major roads and urban centres.
When a motorist commits an offence such as speeding, lane violation or failing to wear a seatbelt, the system automatically records the violation and sends an instant notification to the driver or vehicle owner via SMS.
The message indicates the type of offence committed and the fine payable. Motorists are required to settle the fine within seven days through designated payment channels.
Failure to pay within the specified period will attract additional penalties, including interest on the outstanding amount.
Drivers or vehicle owners with unpaid fines will also be blocked from accessing NTSA services, such as vehicle transactions or licence-related services, until the penalties are cleared.
The digital enforcement system is expected to enhance transparency, reduce manual policing and promote compliance with traffic regulations.
