Prominent Kenyan journalist and media personality Willis Raburu recently made a significant return to Chemelil in Kisumu County, marking a deeply personal milestone in his life and career.
The visit was highlighted by a powerful spiritual encounter where Raburu sought blessings from the community’s religious leaders.
Sharing the experience with his followers, Raburu described the trip as a return to the place where his story first took root. For the media veteran, the visit was less about professional accolades and more about reconnecting with the foundations of his identity.

A Moment of Deep Devotion
In a series of vivid images, Raburu is seen inside a local church, surrounded by a circle of several clerics. The atmosphere is one of intense solemnity as the journalist kneels on two small cushions placed on the floor.
Dressed in a simple striped shirt and dark trousers, Raburu is captured with his head bowed and hands clasped in front of him.
The clerics, wearing traditional white robes adorned with bright pink stoles, lay their hands upon his shoulders and head in a collaborative act of prayer.
Another image shows Raburu standing outside the modest stone church building with the group of religious leaders under a clear, bright sky, signifying a successful conclusion to the spiritual exercise.
"Sometimes God takes you back to the places where your story began, not to remind you who you were, but to show you who you are becoming," Raburu noted.
The Roots of a Dreams
Chemelil holds a unique place in Raburu’s history. He noted that part of his journey started in this region as a student. The area, known for its vast sugar plantations and the Chemelil Sugar Company, provided the setting for his early dreams.

“Chemelil is more than a memory for me. It is part of the story of Kisumu County, a county full of promise, resilience, and great people,” he added.

Raburu’s return was not just a nostalgic trip but a recognition of the land and roots that continue to connect him to Kisumu County.
He emphasised that the visit was a lesson in humility and a way to show respect to the community that shaped his early years.
The Legacy of Chemelil
Chemelil is a key township within the Muhoroni constituency of Kisumu County. Historically, it has been a hub for the sugar industry in Western Kenya. For public figures like Raburu, returning to such a location serves as an inspiration to local youth, bridging the gap between humble beginnings and national success.
The journalist concluded his visit by expressing his belief that the best chapters are still ahead.
