Africa trails other regions in the consumption of “blue foods”—aquatic animals and plants harvested or farmed in oceans and freshwater—according to new data from the World Economic Forum.

The figures show Europeans consume about 112 grams of aquatic protein per person daily, followed by North America at 110 grams and Oceania at 101 grams. The global average stands at 91 grams.

Africa records the lowest intake at just 65 grams per person per day—about 40 per cent below the global average.

The report warns that by 2032 Africa could be the only continent where per capita blue food consumption declines as production growth struggles to keep pace with rapid population growth.
