SportPesa League leaders Gor Mahia face Nairobi Regional League outfit BB Bread, a side that has already proven it can rattle the established order.
On paper, the gulf in class, experience and tactical organisation between the two sides is enormous. Gor Mahia are one of Kenya’s most decorated clubs, while BB Bread operate several tiers below in the football pyramid.
Yet cup football has its own script. BB Bread arrive brimming with confidence after pulling off one of the shocks of the competition in the Round of 64, eliminating AFC Leopards, who currently sit second in the SportPesa League standings.
The underdogs stunned Ingwe 4-3 on penalties after battling to a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
For Gor Mahia, this tie is about professionalism and focus. K’Ogalo will be determined to avoid any complacency and deliver a commanding performance.
They also carry extra motivation after last season’s FKF Cup heartbreak, where they fell 2-1 to Nairobi United in the final.
Expect Gor Mahia to dominate possession and impose their physical and technical superiority early in the match.
However, BB Bread will approach the contest with nothing to lose and that kind of freedom can be dangerous in knockout football. Having already toppled one giant, they will believe another upset is possible.
Still, repeating the feat against a more organised and tactically disciplined Gor Mahia side will be a far taller order.
Prediction: Gor Mahia 3–0 BB Bread
Newcastle vs Manchester City (FA Cup)
[St. James’ Park, Saturday at 11 pm]
Newcastle United welcome Manchester City to St. James’ Park for what promises to be a fascinating FA Cup fifth-round showdown.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two sides this season, with City already enjoying the upper hand, most notably in the EFL Cup semi-final where the Cytizens swept past the Magpies to reach the final.
Pep Guardiola’s side progressed with a convincing 5-1 aggregate victory, powered by standout performances from Omar Marmoush and Tijjani Reijnders, both of whom dictated the tempo and carved open Newcastle’s defence with ease.
The most recent encounter came in the league last month, where City again edged the contest 2-1, underlining their recent dominance in this fixture.
History offers Newcastle little comfort, with City having won 17 of the last 23 meetings between the sides and they have also prevailed in two previous FA Cup quarter-final clashes between the teams, winning both by a 2-0 margin.
From a tactical standpoint, City’s high-possession, patient build-up play will likely dominate proceedings. Newcastle, meanwhile, will look to hurt the visitors on the counterattack, relying on the pace and directness of players like Harvey Barnes to exploit spaces behind City’s high defensive line.
Prediction: Newcastle 1–3 Manchester City
Bidco United vs Tusker (FKF Cup)
[Police Sacco Stadium Friday at 3 pm]
Bidco United welcome Tusker FC to the Police Sacco Stadium for what could be a tightly contested FKF Cup Round of 32 encounter.
The two sides arrive in contrasting positions on the league table, with Bidco 15th on the log and Tusker in seventh place.
Based on recent results and historical dominance, Tusker enter the tie as clear favourites.
The Brewers have enjoyed overwhelming success in this fixture, winning nine of the last 10 meetings with Bidco, who have managed just one victory.
Their most recent encounter came in November last year, when Tusker edged a narrow 1-0 victory in a league clash.
Despite a somewhat uneven start to the 2025/26 campaign, Tusker appear to have rediscovered their rhythm under French tactician Julien Mette.
Bidco, on the other hand, have struggled to find attacking fluency with goals hard to come by, particularly against stronger opponents.
Tusker’s defensive organisation, combined with their ability to grind out results in tight contests, makes them a formidable opponent in knockout football.
If Bidco are to spring a surprise, they will need a near-perfect performance, particularly in front of goal.
Prediction: Bidco United 0–2 Tusker FC
