Mombasa United players celebrate during a recent match/Mombasa United

Mombasa United will be out to extend their lead at the top of the National Super League (NSL) table when they face Equity Bank FC on Friday.

The Mombasa-based side will open a six-point gap for at least 24 hours, as their opponents, Migori Youth, will be in action on Saturday.

Coach Gilbert Selebwa says the fixture against the fifth-placed side will be difficult, but added that his charges are both mentally and physically ready for the showdown. He said he has no injury worries ahead of their 23rd fixture of the season.

Equity Bank are unbeaten at their Mashuru Complex home ground in Kajiado County.

“I know Mashuru is a hostile hunting ground, but we are heading there for maximum points. We want to have a comfortable lead at the top of the log. Our destiny is in our hands, and we don’t want to depend on results elsewhere,” said Selebwa.

He added: “NSL is a very competitive league. There is no room for slip-ups as we head to the home stretch. We want to keep the momentum,” remarked the veteran coach.

Mombasa United’s bid for a maiden appearance in the SportPesa League was last weekend boosted after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over promotion-chasing Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) at Serani grounds.

Mombasa United lead the log with 46 points, while Migori Youth trails in second place, three points behind. Equity Bank is fifth with 37 points from 21 games.

On Saturday, Migori Youth will be up against the bottom of the log Vihiga United at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu, while third-placed MOFA will hope to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Naivas FC at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
