As conversations around gender equality continue, 2026 marks a major milestone for the Zuri Foundation, as the Zuri Awards celebrate their 10th anniversary.
The occasion also coincides with the 10th edition of the awards, an initiative that recognizes the exceptional achievements of women across diverse sectors in Kenya.
The foundation’s work highlights an important truth: African women are leading change, but they still need stronger systems of support.
Zuri Foundation Co-Founder Muthoni Gitobu says African women are leading, but more support is needed. “While progress has been made, the goal of reaching gender equality across Africa is still a long way off,” she said.
Muthoni was speaking when she announced the nominations for the 10th edition of 2026 Zuri Awards, honouring the exceptional achievements of women across diverse sectors in Kenya.
“African women are stepping up, claiming their rightful place, and shaping the world they want to see. We must ensure that commitments made are translated into action,” Muthoni expressed.
Among the nominees include : SheFights Cancer Foundation, Epicare Africa, Kisumu Youth Wash Parliament, Ripple of Hope Foundation, Project Red Lipstick, Yakwetu Online Limited, The AMOT Network, #WhatGirlsWant Initiative of ATHENA Network, Her Hustle Limited, Vermi-Farm Initiative, Bungoma Youth Umbrella Shield, Glam By Kez, Acts For Change Trust, Protect A Girl Image Organisation, and French Konnect among others.
Others: Budding Leaders Program, Zion Zone Tennis Foundation, Teen Pregnancy Awareness, Maasai Mara Women Empowerment Guide Organisation, Women in STEAM Initiative, Northern Youth Initiative, Tabasamu Na Upendo, Tulivu Safe Haven CBO, Watere Global Solutions, Unspoken Podcast, among others.
This year’s awards will culminate in a Gala Luncheon Ceremony on March 5, 2026 at the Movenpick Hotel, aligning with the global theme for International Women’s Day : #AccelerateAction. The campaign focuses on creating a more inclusive world for women.
“The campaign encourages everyone
to work together to tackle the barriers and biases women face in their personal
and professional lives,” she emphasized.
In the last nine years, the Zuri Awards have significantly impacted thousands of lives, creating digital stories for over 1000 submissions, shortlisting over 200 nominees and honoring over 100 women raising over $350,000, and impacting over 11.7 million lives.
The nominations span 16 categories showcasing the multifaceted contributions of women across Kenya, including Agriculture, Healthcare, Renewable Energy, Arts, Culture and Entertainment, Sports, Manufacturing, Education, Humanitarian Efforts, Public Service, Business, STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Environmental Sustainability, Media, Young Achievers, and Women With Disabilities.
