The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has gained continental recognition as its Director General, Luka Kimeli, received the African Regulatory Leadership Excellence Award.

The award, presented by the African Leadership Magazine in Accra, Ghana, honours leaders who have demonstrated significant impact in governance, institutional credibility, and sectoral development across Africa.

Kimeli’s recognition reflects his leadership and transformative role in Kenya’s transport infrastructure sector.

The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, who presented the award alongside Colonel (Rtd) Shem Ishahilidza Amadi, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana.

Receiving the award on Kimeli’s behalf was KeNHA’s Director of Planning, Research and Compliance, Daniel Cherono.

“This award highlights the importance of leadership that not only drives infrastructure development but also strengthens regulatory frameworks and public trust,” Cherono said during the ceremony.

“On behalf of Kimeli, we are humbled by this recognition and remain committed to elevating Kenya’s transport infrastructure to international standards.”

Under Kimeli’s leadership, KeNHA has undertaken several flagship projects aimed at expanding road networks, improving highway safety, and enhancing connectivity in both urban and rural areas. His leadership has also been credited with introducing governance practices that improve accountability, efficiency, and transparency in project implementation.

The African Regulatory Leadership Excellence Award is highly competitive, with nominees evaluated on their contributions to institutional development, policy reform, and sectoral impact. Kimeli’s selection reflects his influence in advancing Kenya’s infrastructure agenda and fostering public and stakeholder confidence.

“This recognition is not just for Kimeli but also for the entire KeNHA team, whose dedication and professionalism have helped make our roads safer and more accessible for all Kenyans,” Cherono added.

The award also recognised other African leaders, highlighting individuals whose work continues to shape the continent’s development trajectory.
