A new report by the Thomson Reuters Foundation released in February 2026 highlights the key areas journalists in Kenya say need urgent support to help them thrive in their profession.
According to the survey findings, legal protection emerged as the top priority, with the highest proportion of respondents identifying it as a critical need.
Training and capacity-building ranked closely behind, underscoring demand for continuous professional development in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
Mental health and wellbeing support for individuals working in journalism was also cited as a major concern, reflecting growing awareness of the emotional toll associated with reporting.
Improved access to digital tools and technology featured prominently, alongside calls for policy reform to strengthen the media environment.
Respondents further pointed to infrastructure improvements, including reliable internet and electricity, as essential to effective news gathering and dissemination.
Cyberstalking and harassment of journalists were also identified as significant challenges requiring targeted intervention to safeguard media practitioners across the country.
