Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, alongside other stakeholders, during the launch on Friday, February 27, 2026/XThe County Government of Nakuru, led by Governor Susan Kihika, has officially launched the Military Veterans Chapter for the Nakuru region.
According to a statement by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the initiative aims to honour retired members of the forces and strengthen county-level support systems within the national framework.
“The establishment of the Nakuru Military Veterans Chapter aligns with the Kenya Military Veterans Act, 2022, legislation designed to create structured support systems for ex-service personnel and their dependents,” the statement said.
It adds that county chapters serve as critical links in decentralising services, providing veterans with access to healthcare, psycho-social support, mentorship, skills training, and economic empowerment opportunities to ease their transition into civilian life.
During the launch, Governor Kihika acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by men and women who served in the KDF.
She emphasised that veterans possess unique skills, leadership experience, and discipline that can be harnessed to drive socio-economic growth within Nakuru.
“As a county, we take great pride in our retired military community,” she said.
“Recognising their expertise, we have committed to creating structured opportunities for them in infrastructure development, climate action, security and disaster management, mentorship, combating drug abuse, and conflict resolution.”
The Governor also announced support mechanisms, including access to the county’s low-interest Sh100 million Wezesha Fund, aimed at enabling veterans and their spouses—including widows—to finance income-generating ventures.
She underscored the county’s commitment to partnering with veterans to boost community development and economic prosperity.
Representatives of the Military Veterans, led by Lt Gen (Rtd) Humphrey Njoroge and Amb Col (Rtd) Elijah Matibo, reiterated their support for the initiative. They highlighted the importance of strong county-level structures to facilitate mentorship programmes, skills development, civic engagement, and economic empowerment for veterans and their families.
The launch also provided a platform for veterans to share personal stories of resilience, patriotism, and the challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life.
The ceremony was attended by key county officials, including Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenya, Public Service CEC Ambrose Ogeto, and Citizens Engagement Chief Officer Edward Gitau, alongside spouses of military veterans.
With the establishment of the Nakuru Military Veterans Chapter, the county joins a growing national movement to ensure that those who defended the nation are not only honoured but also actively integrated into county development initiatives.
The chapter is expected to strengthen veteran welfare, provide mentorship opportunities for the youth, and leverage the wealth of experience retired military officers bring to the county’s socio-economic transformation.
