The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has dismissed as fake a public notice circulating online alleging plans to clear traders operating within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway.

In a statement, the Authority cautioned members of the public against falling for the notice dated February 27, 2026, which purportedly directs traders to remove their stalls, kiosks, structures and merchandise within seven days.

“The notice currently circulating online alleging that the Authority intends to clear encroachments within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway is false,” KeNHA said.

The fake notice, marked “PUBLIC NOTICE CLEARANCE OF ALL ROAD ENCROACHMENTS No. 736,” further claims that the clearance is meant to facilitate the construction of designated roadside stalls to improve safety and reduce congestion.

It also falsely states that traders wishing to continue operating would be required to pay an annual fee of Sh70,000 per stall, obtain county approvals, and comply with various regulatory provisions.

KeNHA distanced itself from the contents and format of the document, terming it misleading and unauthorised.

“KeNHA has not issued any such directive and has not authorised any individual to issue the said notice on its behalf,” the Authority said.

"Members of the public are advised to disregard the fake notice in its entirety.”

The purported notice was allegedly signed by an individual identified as Eng. Quinter Omondi.

However, the highways agency clarified that the name does not correspond with any authorised communication regarding Murang’a Highway.

The Authority reiterated that any official communication concerning road reserves, enforcement actions or infrastructure projects is disseminated through its verified platforms and in accordance with established legal and administrative procedures.

“KeNHA remains committed to transparent engagement and lawful management of the national road network. Any legitimate enforcement or development activity will be formally communicated through our official channels,” the statement added.

The agency urged traders, motorists and the general public to verify information through its official website and social media platforms before acting on it.

The incident comes amid the ongoing eviction notices along major highways, including Mombasa road and Thika road.

KeNHA further encouraged anyone in doubt to contact its offices directly for clarification.
