Standing through the sunroof of a black vehicle, he proudly lifted the hefty fish above his head. Its silvery-grey scales gleamed in the sunlight, while its broad head and thick torso hinted at an impressive catch.

He gripped it firmly with both hands, arms raised high in a triumphant pose, clearly pleased with the moment.

The Deputy President was dressed in a bright neon yellow reflective safety vest layered over a patterned long-sleeve shirt and navy trousers.

A white baseball cap shaded his face, his expression warm and celebratory as he shared the lighthearted moment with the crowd gathered around him.

But beyond the photo-op was a serious message. The government, he said, is rolling out a comprehensive programme to uplift millions of fisherfolk and other Kenyans who rely on the blue economy from the Indian Ocean to Lake Victoria and inland water bodies.

Kindiki said Sh450 million has been released in Homa Bay for the construction of three fish landing sites at Nyandiwa, Kakula and Mainuga.

“The facilities are expected to modernise fish handling and storage, boosting hygiene standards and reducing post-harvest losses,” Kindiki said.

He added that an additional Sh200 million has been disbursed to support fish farmers in the county with cages, pond liners and predator nets.

According to the Deputy President, the intervention is already enabling rural fish farming groups to earn millions of shillings in steady income.

Plans are also underway to purchase high-capacity boats and establish a search and rescue centre to enhance safety for lake fishermen. “Beach Management Units are receiving grants aimed at strengthening their businesses and streamlining operations along the shoreline,” he said.

Kindiki further noted that he inspected ongoing construction at the Nyandiwa Fish Landing Site, a Sh150 million project that will include fish coolers and other modern facilities designed to improve value addition and market access.
