Public transport company Super Metro has said it is cooperating with authorities investigating a late-night incident in Kitengela that allegedly left a 25-year-old man dead, sparking outrage and renewed concerns over passenger safety.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Super Metro confirmed that it was aware of reports surrounding a serious incident that allegedly occurred on February 24, 2026, at around 11pm in Kitengela, involving one of its buses.

“We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and the National Transport and Safety Authority as they conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident. Currently the matter remains under investigation,” the company said.

The firm stated that its vehicle, registration number KDK 060H, was en route from Kitengela to Nairobi’s Central Business District with 32 passengers on board when it was stopped by an irate mob of boda boda riders.

According to the company, the riders claimed that the conductor had pushed a passenger from the moving bus—allegations that reportedly caught those on board by surprise.

“This came as a surprise to all on board. According to preliminary information, the incident resulted to a fatality,” the statement added.

The bus is currently being held at Athi River Police Station, while the driver and conductor remain in police custody as detectives piece together the circumstances leading to the tragic death.

Super Metro further indicated that it has launched its own internal review alongside cooperating with investigators.

Super Metro said it is also conducting an internal review to determine whether any company policies or procedures were compromised so as to improve on safety measures that may be necessary.

“Anyone with relevant information to this matter is encouraged to contact the law enforcement agency,” the company added.

The company expressed condolences to the bereaved family, stating “As a company we are deeply saddened by the reported loss of life, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those who are affected. Safety of our passengers, employees, and communities is our major concern.”

“We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the safety of everyone who interacts with our services.”

However, even as investigations continue, the grieving family of the deceased, identified as Joseph Mureithi, is demanding swift action from authorities.

They allege that Mureithi was deliberately pushed out of the moving bus by crew members before the same vehicle ran over him.

According to relatives, the incident occurred along the Kitengela–Namanga Highway moments before 11pm. They claim that after he was ejected from the bus, the vehicle did not stop and instead ran over him before speeding off, leaving him fatally injured by the roadside.

Mureithi, described as a hardworking and devoted son, had only recently secured employment and was reportedly using his earnings to help settle his ailing mother’s hospital bills. He was rushed to Shalom Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
