Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka speaking in Nyamache, Kisii County on Wednesday/Handout
Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has questioned President William Ruto’s administration over reports that a Sudanese rebel leader is holding a Kenyan passport.
Kalonzo said the alleged issuance of Kenyan travel documents to militia leaders could hurt Kenya’s image abroad and raise national security concerns.
His remarks followed reports that a senior Sudanese militia figure recently sanctioned by the United States is listed as holding a Kenyan passport.
“Now the Ruto government is issuing passports to militia leaders from Sudan and thus jeopardising relationships with friendly countries. It’s tragic that individuals sanctioned by the US Treasury are using our passport,” Kalonzo said.
Speaking at Nyamache in Bobasi, Kisii County, on the third day of the United Opposition leaders’ tour of the Gusii region, the former Vice President claimed that Kenya had lost a significant share of the Sudanese tea market due to such developments.
“Our tea has lost a huge market in Sudan after the Ruto administration started dealing with militia leaders,” Kalonzo said.
At the same event, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua said opposition leaders were documenting alleged cases of extrajudicial killings with the intention of referring them to the International Criminal Court if necessary.
“We are warning President Ruto that he risks being returned to the ICC. He was once taken to The Hague, and unless he is careful, he knows what happened last time he was taken there,” Karua said.
On Wednesday, the opposition leaders began their third day of activities in Ogembo town, Bomachoge Chache, before proceeding to Kenyenya in Bomachoge Borabu and later to Nyamache in Bobasi. They are expected to conclude their events in Masimba, Nyaribari Masaba.
The team announced plans to visit Nakuru on Friday and Saturday as they seek to popularise their alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The leaders, who include former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and former Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya and Eugene Wamalwa, have pledged to support a joint candidate to challenge President Ruto.
They accused President Ruto of failing to implement some campaign pledges, including the Bonyunyu Dam in Kitutu Masaba, the Kisii Cancer Centre, and the dualling of the Sotik–Kisii highway.
The three-day tour aims to consolidate support for Dr. Matiang’i and his Jubilee Party as he seeks backing from coalition partners to be named their joint presidential flagbearer.
