President William Ruto jets back to Kenya after attending Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema’s inauguration on September 1, 2026/PCS

President William Ruto has landed back to the country on hours after travelling to Zambia to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Ruto had left the country on Tuesday morning for Lusaka, where he joined other leaders at the ceremony marking Hichilema's inauguration following his re-election in the August 13 presidential election.

The President was received upon his return by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, among other political leaders and government officials.

Also present at the airport were Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and his deputies Gilbert Masengeli and Eliud Lagat.

Ruto's trip to Zambia came after Hichilema secured another term in office following the presidential election held on August 13.

The Kenyan President had earlier congratulated Hichilema on his victory, saying the outcome reflected the confidence that Zambians had placed in his leadership.

Ruto's attendance at the inauguration underlined the close diplomatic ties between Kenya and Zambia and continued engagement between the two countries.

Deputy President Kindiki had earlier seen off Ruto as he departed Kenya on Tuesday morning for the inauguration ceremony.

The visit was a one-day trip, with Ruto landing intto the country later in the evening after attending the official ceremony.
