Deputy President Kithure Kindiki speaking in Meru on February 25, 2026 / DPCSDeputy President Kithure Kindiki has defended President William Ruto’s development record in Meru County while criticising opposition leaders for what he described as attempts to incite residents against the government.
Speaking in the Kunati area of the Tigania East Constituency, Kindiki said the region remains firmly aligned with the government and is focused on development rather than political rhetoric.
“Meru County is not and can never be a political field for the opposition. All those politicians trying to incite hatred against President William Ruto and the government previously held senior positions in government and never bothered to develop Meru County,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President accused some opposition leaders of neglecting the region when they held powerful positions in government, including roles as vice presidents, deputy presidents and ministers. He argued that their current criticism of the administration lacked credibility, given their record.
“When they were vice presidents, Deputy Presidents and ministers, all they did was bother about their personal interests and never prioritised the needs of Meru County and Mount Kenya,” he said.
Kindiki said the current administration has made significant strides in delivering development projects across the region, emphasising that residents are aware of the government’s efforts and remain supportive.
“President Ruto has, in just three years, brought us massive development. Those loitering here inciting our people to hate the government and our president are wasting their time. The people of Meru know what is best for them; they want development, not empty rhetoric,” he added.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity in the Mount Kenya region, where leaders from both the government and opposition have been engaging residents in efforts to consolidate support.
