Embakasi South MP Babu Owino at a past rally  /File

Babu Owino, the fiery Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, has captivated Kenya’s political landscape with an inspiring tale of resilience and ambition.

Emerging from the impoverished slums of Nyalenda in Kisumu county, Babu has become a formidable figure in contemporary politics, advocating for the marginalised and rallying support across Nairobi, Nyanza and other parts of the country.

Babu’s remarkable journey began in his early years in Nyalenda, where he attended Kisumu Township Primary School before advancing to Kisumu Boys’ Secondary School.

His academic prowess earned him a scholarship to pursue A-levels in the Cambridge system, ultimately leading to six diplomas.

In 2008, he joined the University of Nairobi, where he first studied actuarial science, later completing a law degree.

On May 23, 2025, he achieved an important milestone by becoming an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, reinforcing his commitment to social justice and the legal defense of marginalised groups.

Babu’s political career launched in 2011 when he was elected chairman of the Student Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu), a position he held for multiple terms, gaining recognition as one of the country’s most beloved student leaders.

His advocacy during this time propelled him into mainstream politics, culminating in his election as the MP for Embakasi East on an ODM ticket in 2017.

Since then, he has consistently ranked among Kenya’s top-performing MPs, leveraging his platform to challenge government mismanagement and advocate for social justice.

Recently, Babu has been in the spotlight for his active role in the ODM rallies in Kakamega and Kitengela alongside Senator Edwin Sifuna and other ODM leaders.

His organisational prowess was evident as he mobilised thousands of supporters, demonstrating his effectiveness as a grassroots organiser.

Babu utilised a robust social media strategy and funded logistical efforts to enhance turnout, showcasing his commitment to galvanising support for Sifuna’s leadership.

At the Kitengela rally on February 15, an impressive crowd gathered to hear Sifuna speak, largely due to Babu’s instrumental role in mobilisation.

The event was marred by police disruptions, illustrating the ongoing tensions between the opposition and government authorities. “They may have the party, but we have the members,” Babu declared defiantly, reinforcing the loyalty of his supporters amidst discussions of factional wrangles within the ODM party.

The dynamics of Babu’s relationship with Sifuna have evolved into a strategic collaboration, especially in response to the challenges faced by ODM following the death of its leader Raila Odinga on October 15 last year.

Babu has been outspoken in his criticism of the broad-based arrangement, positioning himself firmly against any perceived threats to the ODM legacy.

“You cannot discuss controversy in Kenyan politics without mentioning Babu Owino,” a political analyst remarked.

His vocal opposition to government policies reflects a commitment to the principles championed by Raila, his political godfather.

While Babu continues to rise politically, he has also confronted significant challenges.

In 2020, he was involved in a controversial incident where he shot a DJ during a confrontation in a nightclub.

This incident attracted widespread media attention, leading to legal proceedings against him.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Babu took it upon himself to support DJ Evolve, whose recovery required extensive medical treatment.

He publicly committed to covering the medical expenses and ensuring the victim received proper rehabilitation.

This gesture was seen as undisguised remorse and demonstration he was courageous enough to take responsibility for his actions.

The support he enjoys from the Odinga family, particularly from Winnie, adds another layer of strength to his political base and reinforces his standing among ODM loyalists.

With the power of the Odinga dynasty behind him, Babu feels emboldened to push for his ambitions — including a bid for Nairobi’s gubernatorial seat.

Recent opinion polls point to Babu’s head start in the gubernatorial race, with him commanding 25 per cent support compared to Sifuna’s 13.7 per cent and incumbent governor, Johnston Sakaja, trailing at 8.6 per cent.

“Three months is a long time in politics. With Odinga’s passing and the backing from his family, Babu is likely to extend his lead,” commented communication expert Pauline Njoroge, who has thrown her hat in the ring and dying to succeed Esther Passaris as Nairobi Woman Rep.
