Kenya has the highest electricity costs among selected African countries, according to the 2023–2025 average data by Global Petrol Prices (2025).

The report shows Kenyan households pay an average of Sh29.63 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while businesses pay Sh23.70 per kWh.

Within East Africa, Ethiopia has the lowest residential tariff at Sh0.81 per kWh, followed by Tanzania at Sh12.25.

Rwanda and Uganda charge Sh27.07 and Sh23.03 respectively for households.

In the rest of Africa, Egypt’s residential cost stands at Sh3.23, Nigeria at Sh4.85, South Africa at Sh25.85 and Tunisia at Sh9.02.

For businesses, Tunisia (Sh15.35) and South Africa (Sh13.06) offer lower rates than Kenya.

The data underscores Kenya’s relatively high power costs compared to regional and continental peers, raising concerns about household energy burdens and business competitiveness.
