Authorities in South Africa have taken into custody the youngest son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe following a shooting incident at a high-end residence in Johannesburg.

Bellarmine Mugabe, 28, was arrested after a 23-year-old man, said to be working as a gardener at the property, was shot and seriously wounded. The incident occurred at a house in the upscale Hyde Park area, where Mugabe was reportedly staying.

Police officers who searched the home recovered spent ammunition casings but were unable to locate the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators say efforts to trace the missing weapon are ongoing.

Bellarmine is the youngest child of the late Zimbabwean president and his second wife, Grace Mugabe. Robert Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before being removed from office in 2017. He died two years later in 2019.

Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that a second suspect was also arrested in connection with the case. Both individuals are expected to make a court appearance in the near future.

Although authorities have not formally released the names of those detained, journalists present at the scene reported seeing Bellarmine Mugabe in handcuffs. His arrest has since been widely reported by local media.

The injured man remains hospitalized in critical condition after sustaining a single gunshot wound. Speaking outside the property, Nevhuhulwi stated that investigators have not yet recovered the firearm and that the suspects have not revealed its location.

The investigation remains active as police continue gathering evidence.
