Njoroge Kibugu takes a shot during the DP World Tour Magical Kenya Open at Karen Country Club on Friday/ HANDOUTKenya’s Njoroge Kibugu will carry the nation’s hopes into the weekend of the 2026 Magical Kenya Open after emerging as the only Kenyan to make the cut at Karen Country Club.
Kibugu battled to rounds of 66 and 69 for a five-under-par total of 135, safely inside the projected cut line as the rest of his 17 compatriots fell by the wayside. In a tournament dominated by established DP World Tour names, the 24-year-old showed composure and maturity to keep the home challenge alive.
He started strongly with a four-under 66 in the opening round, and although his second round of 69 was less spectacular, it proved steady enough to secure passage into the final two rounds.
He heads into the weekend knowing a low round on moving day could propel him into contention for a top-20 finish. More importantly, his presence ensures Kenyan fans will have a local hero to rally behind as the tournament reaches its decisive stages.
“I wanted to hit a five, but my caddie encouraged me otherwise,” Kibugu said of a pivotal club selection late in his second round.
“Going into 18, I knew I needed a birdie — maybe even an eagle.”
The Kenyan admitted there were nervy moments during his round. “On number 12, I just came out of it. Fourteen was a lapse in judgment. I wasn’t in the zone.”
“When I bogeyed 14, I knew 18 was my best chance,” he added.
His approach into the closing hole settled closer than expected. “I didn’t expect it to land as close as it did. It was pretty close. The rare fun showed up.”
Buoyed by recent form, he added: “I’m coming off a couple of wins. It feels good to get the win. I can’t be more grateful to him and my mum.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, Kibugu urged fans to rally behind him. “Going forward, please come out in numbers. We like that. Bring the energy into the tournament. After seeing how I played…”
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Casey Jarvis and France’s Frederic Lacroix will head into the weekend tied at the top of the leaderboard after a gripping second round left them locked at 13-under-par 127.
Jarvis, who opened his campaign with a blistering 62, returned a composed five-under 65 to maintain his position at the summit. The young South African has looked assured throughout the opening two days, combining accuracy off the tee with a confident putting stroke to keep the chasing pack at bay.
Lacroix, however, produced one of the standout rounds of the tournament to draw level. After an opening 65, the Frenchman caught fire on Friday with a scintillating eight-under 62, the joint-lowest round among the leaders, vaulting nine places up the leaderboard and firmly into title contention.
Just two shots adrift at 11-under 129 is Spain’s Angel Ayora, who backed up his first-round 64 with a steady 65 to sit alone in third. He is joined at the same mark by South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis, who fired a sensational nine-under 61 — the lowest round of the week — to surge into the mix.
Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia also sits at 11-under following rounds of 64 and 65, ensuring the leaderboard remains tightly bunched heading into moving day.
A further shot back at 10-under 130 are Italy’s Francesco Laporta and American Davis Bryant, both well within striking distance should the leaders falter.
The congestion continues at nine-under 131, where France’s Antoine Rozner, Finland’s Tapio Pulkkanen, Scotland’s David Law, South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence, Denmark’s Jacob Skov Olesen, and the Netherlands’ Ryan van Velzen remain firmly in contention.
With only four shots separating the top 13 players, the tournament is finely poised for a dramatic weekend showdown. If the opening two rounds are any indication, the battle for the Kenyan crown promises high drama as Europe and South Africa’s finest vie for supremacy.
