Detectives have arrested three suspects believed to be key members of a criminal gang behind a series of armed robberies targeting wines and spirits outlets across several counties.
The arrests follow a recent surge in robbery-with-violence incidents, during which traders in alcoholic beverages reported repeated attacks involving theft, property damage, and, in some cases, loss of life.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects were apprehended during coordinated operations in multiple locations following intelligence-led investigations.
"Following a recent surge in armed robberies targeting wines and spirits outlets across Kajiado, Nairobi, and Kiambu counties, detectives have arrested key suspects believed to be behind the spate of attacks," the statement said.
Two of the suspects, described by detectives as ringleaders, were arrested at separate hideouts in Ruiru and Juja. A third suspect, linked to the same network, was arrested in Nakuru.
Police said the gang is believed to have terrorised traders by staging night attacks on liquor outlets, using crude weapons to overpower guards and steal money and alcohol.
The suspects allegedly targeted premises across county borders, a tactic investigators say was meant to frustrate tracking efforts.
During the arrests, detectives recovered three motor vehicles believed to have been used to transport stolen goods.
"During the operation, detectives recovered three motor vehicles — a black Toyota Voxy, a white Toyota Voxy, and a sky-blue Toyota Raum — all loaded with assorted alcoholic beverages suspected to have been stolen," the authorities stated.
Officers also seized shop-breaking tools, sisal ropes suspected to have been used to restrain guards, and several sisal bags believed to have been used to carry the stolen liquor.
The three suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue. They will undergo an identification parade before being arraigned in court. Their identities have been withheld pending the completion of the identification process.
Detectives said investigations are ongoing as they pursue other members of the criminal network believed to be at large.
The DCI reiterated its commitment to dismantling organised criminal gangs and restoring safety for business owners affected by the robberies.
