Njoroge Kibugu during round one of the Magical Kenya Open at Karen Golf Club on Thursday/HANDOUT

Kenya’s Njoroge Kibugu will look to carry forward his attacking approach into the second round of the 2026 Magical Kenya Open after opening with a four-under-par 66 on Thursday.

The 22-year-old combined patience on the front nine with aggressive scoring on the back, posting five birdies against a single bogey. His back-nine charge included three consecutive birdies, signalling the type of controlled risk-taking he hopes to repeat on Friday.

“The golf course was good. I started well. It was quite a hot start in the morning, but I managed to pull it through,” Kibugu said.

Kibugu admitted that consistency on the greens remains an area for improvement, but he intends to stick to his strategy of creating opportunities and capitalising on them.

“I turned four under. I created a lot of chances which I utilised well. I got myself opportunities and made good use of them. I, however, dropped at 17,” he noted.

In Kibugu’s words, the course is firmer than expected, which offers players the chance to position shots. Kibugu believes this suits his style of aggressive, chance-making golf.

“I am happy, as surprisingly it has not been that wet. If it doesn't rain, then it will firm up well,” he said.

Kibugu's four shots off the early lead put him comfortably inside the projected cut line, which will be known at the end of Friday's round.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s Niklas Lemke and South Africa’s Casey Jarvis fired brilliant eight-under-par 62s to share the lead after the opening round. Both players combined precise shot-making with aggressive finishes, setting the pace early in the tournament.

Scotland’s David Law and Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat sit just behind on seven-under-par 63, while a cluster of players, including Ryggs Johnston (USA), Angel Ayora (ESP), Ricardo Gouveia (POR), and Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren and Mikael Lindberg, are six under.

Several other players, including Rocco Repetto Taylor (ESP), Antoine Rozner (FRA), and Jason Scrivener (AUS), are five under, keeping the leaderboard tight and competitive.

With 156 golfers in the field and only the top 65 and ties making the cut, every shot matters. Friday’s Round Two will be crucial as leaders aim to maintain momentum and challengers attempt to climb the standings.

The firm course conditions have allowed scoring opportunities for those able to place the ball accurately, promising an exciting day ahead. Kenyan golfers, including 22-year-old Njoroge Kibugu, will be looking to build on their opening rounds and compete with the international field.
