Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for equal application of the law after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja missed a meeting with leaders of the United Opposition.
The opposition scheduled an appointment with Kanja to get a report on investigations on alleged police brutality, attacks on churches and violence against women and children.
He said the delegation instead engaged with junior police officers.
“The police service exists to serve the people of Kenya, not to intimidate them. The law must apply equally to all. Service must be our earnest endeavor, service to the constitution, service to the people. We will return to your office,” Gachagua said.
On January 29, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy party leader Cleophas Malala wrote to Inspector General of Police Kanja to notify him of an intended visit by leaders of the United Opposition.
The letter raised concerns over sustained attacks against opposition figures and their supporters.
“I write to formally notify you that the leadership of the United Opposition will visit your office to officially raise serious complaints and engage in discussions on the way forward regarding the safety and security of opposition leaders and their supporters,” the letter said.
Malala alleged that opposition leaders and supporters have faced harassment, intimidation and violation of rights across the country.
He said while some incidents were reported to police stations and commands, no updates or corrective actions have been communicated.
The letter said more than 20 incidents involving opposition leaders, including gachagua and other opposition activities were documented in the letter.
The correspondence alleges that some incidents involved criminal gangs, while others are said to have been organised by political figures.
Among the events highlighted is an attack on November 28, 2024, during a funeral service in Limuru, Kiambu county, where Gachagua was reportedly targeted.
Malala also claimed that on December 28, 2024, in Shamata, Nyandarua county, a teargas canister was thrown at opposition vehicles and supporters.
The letter further mentioned last year’s January 18 incident where Dorcas Rigathi was ambushed during a prayer rally at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri town.
In February last year, an incident occurred at St Joseph AIPCA Church in Antubetwe Kiongo, Laare, in Igembe North and in March, worshippers at ACK St Peter’s Cathedral in Nyeri were reportedly injured during a break-in.
Opposition leaders were also said to have faced attacks in Naivasha later that month.
Malala said the DCP party launch in Lavington in May last year was disrupted as was his homecoming in Kakamega county.
He also mentioned multiple alleged attacks in Meru county in June last year, covering areas including Nkubu, Mikinduri, Maua, Kiengu Market and Timau.
Malala emphasised the constitutional mandate of the National Police Service to provide security impartially and protect all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
