Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Wananchi movement appears to be gaining traction after pulling large crowds for the second time in a week.

On Sunday, the Sifuna-led team stormed Kitengela in what appeared to be a show of popularity.

The rally ended abruptly after teargas was lobbed into the crowd, dispersing what had been a huge gathering reminiscent of ODM rallies once held by the late party leader Raila Odinga.

Enthusiastic crowds swelled in Kitengela as leaders addressed them, with chants of “One Term”—a clarion call by opposition leaders.

“Thank you, Kitengela. In spite of all the harassment, intimidation, and violence from this morning, you showed up. They first destroyed our dais and sound equipment in the morning. The state goons have now teargassed a peaceful assembly and brought it to an abrupt end. We shall not relent,” Sifuna said after the disruption.

The Kitengela meeting came just a week after his inaugural rally in Busia, which also attracted huge crowds.

The Nairobi Senator said the turnout was encouraging.

“Kenyans have given me comfort in knowing that even if they do away with Sifuna, another 15 million Sifunas will emerge to continue the mission,” he said.

Sifuna, who was removed as ODM Secretary General before the Political Parties Tribunal reinstated him, has differed with his party leader,  Oburu Oginga and is leading a faction considered a rebel movement from within.

“They may have the party, but we have the members,” Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said, referring to the Linda Wananchi team.

The two sides have differed on the future of ODM following Raila Odinga’s death.

The Oginga-led faction prefers a deal with President Ruto, while the Sifuna team is pushing to either field a presidential candidate or join the United Opposition.

“They say wherever we go, they will disrupt our rallies, but the secret is in numbers, just like these Gen Zs showed us today. Even in Busia, they attempted the same scheme, but the Funyula MP brought young men who provided security,” Sifuna said on Sunday morning before the Kitengela rally.

He added, “I am calling on citizens to come in large numbers. We don’t usually go to their rallies—why are they coming to disrupt ours?”
