A section of political leaders from Mt Kenya East has declared support for the re-election of the Kenya Kwanza government, citing the administration’s delivery on key promises made ahead of the 2022 General Election.
The leaders defended President William Ruto’s development record, pointing to ongoing infrastructure upgrades, revival of stalled road projects, expanded electricity connectivity, water initiatives, housing programs, and signs of economic recovery.
They dismissed suggestions that the Deputy President’s position could be negotiated in coalition talks, insisting the seat is neither vacant nor negotiable.
Speaking at a burial ceremony in Chuka/Igambang’ombe, Muthomi Njuki said President Ruto, with support from Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, has strengthened their bid for re-election.
“The Deputy President’s seat should be completely off the negotiation table because there is no valid reason for it to be targeted. The current holder is capable and should continue serving,” said Mr Njuki.
He further claimed that the ODM had shown interest in the DP position, adding that if pursued, the ruling coalition could “donate” Kindiki to ODM but retain him as Deputy President.
At a community-based organisations (CBOs) empowerment event in Katheri East, Imenti Central, Mwangi Kiunjuri, John Paul Mwirigibe, Kirima Ngushine, John Mutunga, and Dorothy Muthoni echoed similar sentiments.
They warned that any attempt to replace Kindiki would force them to reconsider their support for the government.
The group cautioned against premature political manoeuvres that could destabilise the country and heighten tensions.
Kiunjuri warned that internal divisions within Mt Kenya would weaken the region’s political influence.
“Once Ameru, Embu, and Kikuyu accept to be divided along tribal lines, we will be finished one by one,” said Mr Kiunjuri.
The leaders also accused opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, of misleading residents and driving a wedge between the region and the government.
Mutunga said the administration’s bottom-up economic model is delivering tangible benefits through grassroots empowerment and should be fully supported.
Dorothy Muthoni urged Mt Kenya leaders to speak with one voice and avoid divisive politics, describing Kindiki as a unifying figure focused on development.
Igembe South’s John Paul Mwirigi said they are ready to defend the Kenya Kwanza government’s reflection in the region, citing ongoing work.
Ngushine likened the DP’s seat to a married woman whose dowry has been paid and cannot be claimed by any other man.
