Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Kalerwa Salasya has defended self-proclaimed religious leader Prophet Dr David Owuor following a widely shared investigative broadcast by TV47 Kenya that sparked intense public debate and criticism.
The documentary, titled Divine or Deceptive, examined numerous claims by Prophet Owuor’s Repentance and Holiness Ministry, including assertions that people with HIV/AIDS were cured during large crusades, notably in Nakuru County.

Allegations and Ethical Concerns
TV47’s exposé also highlighted leaked M-Pesa messages showing that the station’s crew received around KSh 20,000 each from Owuor shortly after the interviews — a transaction the station later reversed, according to journalists.
Media ethicists have described such exchanges as potentially problematic under professional codes of conduct.
Critics of the broadcast labelled it a “witch-hunt”, arguing that the coverage was unfairly targeted at a religious leader and his followers. Salasya echoed this view in a statement on social media.
“We must stop attacking Prophet David Owuor,” Salasya wrote, urging political and media figures to respect religious freedom and practice.
Support for Owuor and Broader Divide
Salasya framed the broadcast as an attempt to tarnish the preacher’s reputation and called on citizens to exercise discernment in interpreting media investigations.
He positioned his defence as aligning with broader concerns about faith communities being unfairly targeted by secular scrutiny.
The public response to the TV47 report has been deeply divided. Some Kenyans shared private messages showing efforts to persuade close contacts to reassess their views of the ministry after the broadcast.
In contrast, others staunchly defended the preacher and dismissed the investigative claims.
Meanwhile, Prophet Owuor’s ministry has publicly denied the most serious allegations arising from the documentary, including viral screenshots claiming direct communications with God, labelling them fabricated and malicious.
