The demographic landscape of Africa is undergoing a massive transformation, characterised by an accelerating surge in its youth population.
In the mid-20th century, between 1950 and 1960, the continent saw a modest growth of 16 million young people. However, this figure has climbed steadily with every passing decade.
By the turn of the millennium, the growth rate had more than quadrupled, reaching 72 million between 1990 and 2000.
The momentum shows no signs of slowing. After a growth of 98 million between 2010 and 2020, the current decade (2020–2030) is projected to witness its most significant spike yet, adding 132 million individuals to the youth demographic.
This consistent upward trajectory highlights a "youth bulge" that is reshaping the continent's economic and social future.
As the numbers move from double to triple digits, the sheer scale of this generation underscores Africa's position as the world's youngest and most rapidly evolving continent.
