Reasons for removal of content from Google platform/HILLARY BETT



According to Google’s latest Transparency Report, the Kenyan government significantly increased its attempts to sanitise the digital space in the first half of 2025.

Government agencies submitted requests to remove 42 items, a sharp rise from just 11 in the previous period.

However, Google rejected nearly 62% of these takedown demands, the highest refusal rate to date.

The Communications Authority primarily targeted YouTube videos and Search results, citing "national security," "defamation," and "impersonation".

Google noted that many requests targeted "political content and government criticism".

The company declined most items, stating they either lacked legal merit, were insufficiently detailed, or failed to meet international free speech standards.
