Kenya’s creative industry is undergoing a major transformation, driven by the growing stature of the Cannes Young Lions Competition, which continues to position the country on the global creative map.

Emuron Alemu, the official representative of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in Kenya, has hailed the competition as a game changer, crediting strong partnerships, particularly with Safaricom, for making global participation possible.

"It is through great partners like Safaricom and Tusker that we are able to afford and send our competitors to the global level."

Alemu emphasised that the Cannes Lions platform is unmatched in the creative world.

He described the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity as “the Oscars, the Grammys, and the Olympics of creativity, marketing, and advertising,” noting that it represents the highest global standard for creative excellence.

“This is unique and different from any other competition,” Alemu said. “There are many creative competitions globally, locally, and regionally, but this is undoubtedly the world’s most prestigious one. It is where the best of the best go.”

This year’s competition will see six gold winners from Kenya earn the opportunity to travel to France in June to compete at the global level.

Alemu revealed that Safaricom, the title sponsor, is playing a critical role by covering flight tickets and accommodation for the winning teams, removing one of the biggest barriers that has historically limited African participation in global creative spaces.

Alemu said that such support is essential in ensuring Kenyan talent is not locked out due to logistical or financial constraints.

According to Alemu, the early start of this year’s competition has further strengthened Kenya’s chances on the world stage. He expressed optimism that the country will not only be represented but will also win medals at Cannes.

“We are genuinely optimistic that from the teams we will send, we should have competitors who will medal at the global level,” he said.

He attributed this confidence to the calibre and quality of creativity in Kenya, saying the competition continues to reveal exceptional talent capable of competing with the world’s best.

“We have no doubt about the quality of creativity we have in this country,” Alemu said.

With strong corporate backing and a globally respected platform, the Cannes Young Lions Competition is fast becoming a defining force in Kenya’s creative economy, opening doors, raising standards, and proving that Kenyan creatives belong on the world’s biggest stage.
