The US Embassy in Kenya has announced the opening of applications for a suite of prestigious exchange programs for the 2027-28 cycle.
These programmes are designed to support US foreign policy objectives while providing Kenyans with professional and educational opportunities.
The programmes target current and future leaders across diverse sectors, including students, researchers, academics, businesspeople, and civic leaders.
Participants travel to the United States or Kenya and are expected to return with knowledge and experience to benefit their communities and professional networks.
“These highly competitive programs identify leaders who will bring back experiences and insights to strengthen their communities and professions,” said a spokesperson for the US Embassy Nairobi.
Among the most sought-after initiatives is the Fulbright Program, administered in partnership with the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Kenya is one of over 160 countries worldwide participating in the programme. The Fulbright Program offers grants across four categories: students, scholars, teachers, and professionals.
Fulbright Foreign Student Program
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program allows Kenyans to pursue Master’s level study in the United States.
While the embassy is not accepting applications for PhD study at this time, it encourages eligible candidates to apply for the 2027-28 cycle, which opened on January 19 and will run until April 20, 2026.
Applicants must submit three letters of reference, standardised test scores such as TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or GMAT, and digital copies of all official academic transcripts.
Candidates should have completed four years of university study or hold an equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
“The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is an unparalleled opportunity for academic and personal growth,” the embassy noted, urging prospective applicants to access the application portal via the Fulbright Foreign Student Program website.
Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program
The Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program targets university faculty and administrators with advanced degrees. Participants engage in research or programme and curriculum development projects at US institutions.
Applications for the 2027-28 cycle opened on February 2 and will close on April 20, 2026.
Eligibility requirements include a completed online application, curriculum vitae, a detailed project statement outlining research objectives, three letters of reference, and letters of support from both the applicant’s home institution and a US host institution.
The embassy emphasised that “applications that are incomplete by the deadline will not be considered.”
The programme is designed to foster scholarly collaboration and global knowledge exchange. “Fulbright Visiting Scholars contribute to international research partnerships that extend well beyond the programme duration,” the embassy stated.
Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (FTEA)
The FTEA Programme brings international secondary-level educators to the United States for a six-week professional learning experience at a host university. The programme equips teachers with new pedagogical skills and exposure to innovative educational practices.
Applications for the 2027-28 FTEA cycle are open, with the Kenyan deadline set for March 31, 2026. Interested candidates can access the application through the FTEA programme website hosted by IREX.
The US Embassy encourages all eligible Kenyans to explore these exchange programmes as avenues for professional development, international exposure, and cross-cultural learning.
Detailed information about the programmes and global exchange opportunities is available through the U.S. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and EducationUSA websites.
“These programmes provide a platform for Kenyans to gain new perspectives and return home as agents of change in their communities,” the embassy added, underscoring the transformative potential of international exchange.
As Kenya continues to strengthen educational and professional links with the United States, these programmes represent a vital channel for knowledge sharing, leadership development, and global engagement.
