The Kenyan football community is reeling from the sudden loss of Silas Abungana, a defender for Kakamega Homeboyz.

The club confirmed his passing late on Wednesday night. This tragic news comes only days after the player completed a full match in the top flight of Kenyan football.

A Sudden and Violent End

Details regarding the cause of death have emerged from the club’s official channels. Abungana reportedly succumbed to head injuries. These injuries were sustained during a violent attack on the night of Tuesday, 3 February.

Following the assault, he was rushed to the Kakamega County General Hospital.

“The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday 4 February while receiving treatment,club statement read in part.

He remained under medical care until he passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday.

“This after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, 3 February night,” Homeboyz club added.

Active Until the Very End

The news has shocked fans particularly because of Abungana’s recent activity on the pitch. Just last weekend, Saturday 31st January, the defender was in the starting line-up for a Kenya Premier League fixture.

He played the full 90 minutes in a match against Mara Sugar FC.

There were no immediate signs of ill health or injury during that performance. His sudden transition from the pitch to a hospital bed has left teammates and fans in disbelief.
