The release of over three million documents related to Jeffrey Epstein last Friday has drawn attention to Kenya, after one previously classified page referenced the country.
The files have renewed public interest in Epstein’s private life and his international connections.
They detail communications involving the convicted American sex offender, who died in prison in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges in Manhattan.
One email, titled Kenya, sent by New York-based publicist Peggy Siegal on December 18, 2009, describes her travel plans to Nairobi via Amsterdam and a visit to the Maasai Mara and Sasaab, a luxury lodge near the Samburu National Reserve.
“We land the morning of the 19th in Amsterdam and late evening of the 19th in Nairobi. On Sunday morning, we fly into the bush in the Masai Mara,” Siegal wrote.
The email, addressed to Epstein, thanked him for facilitating the trip: “We cannot thank you enough, yet another life experience.”
Epstein, whose social circle included wealthy individuals, politicians, and royalty, has been linked in previous reporting to allegations of sexual exploitation and trafficking.
Siegal appears in the files as a social facilitator, helping him maintain connections within elite networks after his 2008 conviction.
Other emails in the files show Siegal offering social advice and documenting her attendance at events with Epstein associates, including Ghislaine Maxwell.
In the Nairobi-bound email, Siegal mentions being “on the plane now with Mattie,” who had “passed out” at the airport, and describes plans to photograph themselves with the Maasai in traditional huts.
She added: “Will have a ball and think of you all the time,” and made a reference to the adoption of children from Africa by American celebrities.
The trip was scheduled to include Lamu before returning to the US on January 4, 2010. Epstein responded to her message, writing: “you will be amazed by the aroma.”
Following legislation passed in October requiring disclosure of the documents, the US Justice Department released more than three million additional pages on January 30, including over 2,000 videos and 180,000 images.
The material highlights Epstein’s connections with various influential figures.
In a separate email from April 2009, Siegal discussed what she described as an “Equestrian Safari in Kenya” with a travel agent copied to Epstein.
She also mentioned previous visits to Lamu over the Christmas holidays, which she described as “sensational.”
While the files include sensitive and sometimes disturbing content, Kenya is mentioned only in the context of travel and leisure.
The emails describe visits to Nairobi, the Maasai Mara, and Lamu with anecdotes related to sightseeing, photography, and safari experiences.
The references in the documents depict Kenya as a destination for luxury travel rather than any illegal activity, underscoring its appeal for exclusive wildlife experiences.
