Anti-riot police used tear gas to disperse boda boda riders who took to the streets of Eldoret, disrupting business activity and clashing with Uasin Gishu County askaris.

The protest comes after a rider was reportedly beaten and seriously injured by county askaris, prompting others to demonstrate against the treatment.

Eldoret OCS James Lenaso is leading the anti-riot officers deployed to restore order in the town.

All businesses in the central business district have been temporarily closed as the unrest continues.

The riders have called for a meeting with Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii.

“We are tired of being harassed by the county askaris, and that is why we have decided to protest,” one rider said.

Uasin Gishu County police commander said officers are working to restore normalcy in the town.

The riders blocked the main Uganda Highway, prompting police intervention.
