Nairobi City County contractors responsible for critical infrastructure developments in Kayole Soweto, Kahawa Soweto, Embakasi, and Matopeni have been put on notice.
This is after a status review revealed a shocking 27.3 per cent completion rate for Lot 1, far below the set 98 per cent target.
This decision was reached during a status meeting chaired by the Acting County Secretary and Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Renewal Godfrey Akumali.
The session was attended by the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP) National Team to discuss stalled urban infrastructure projects.
“The current state of Lot 1 is unacceptable,” Akumali declared.
“We will not compromise on the quality or speed of delivery promised to the people of Nairobi.”
Akumali ordered the immediate issuance of a non-performance notice, demanding that contractors ramp up efforts by February 3, 2026, or face termination.
This ultimatum includes a requirement for contractors to clear five months of salary arrears for workers and rectify all site safety hazards immediately.
In addition, the administration expressed alarm over the dismal 1.5 per cent progress in Phase 2 works in Majengo, Huruma, and Mathare.
A notice to terminate will be issued by January 30, 2026, following the contractor's failure to heed previous warnings issued in late 2025.
“Governor Sakaja's administration will not tolerate contractors who jeopardise the safety and development of our informal settlements," Akumali, who also leads the Nairobi County Project Coordination Team, affirmed.
“We are committed to either salvaging these projects or reassigning them to partners who share our vision for Order and Dignity for all Nairobians.”
