The Kitui county assembly on Tuesday cleared the way for the filling of the county secretary, county attorney and secretary to the county public service board positions.

In an unprecedented show of unity, MCAs unanimously approved Governor Julius Malombe’s nominees to the three posts.

Agnes Mulewa and Timothy Muange were approved as county secretary and county attorney, respectively, positions in which they have served in an acting capacity for more than three years.

Also approved was Christopher Ombunya, Governor Malombe’s nominee to the position of secretary to the county public service board.

The MCAs had been recalled from recess by speaker Kevin Katisya to consider vetting reports from the assembly’s appointments committee, which had recommended the approval of all three nominees.

During a lengthy debate, members lauded Malombe for what they described as thorough and meticulous selections to fill the positions.

MCAs praised the governor for identifying individuals they said were best-suited for the offices, with the assembly subsequently approving the nominees without opposition.

Leading the debate, deputy speaker Christopher Nzilu and other MCAs commended the nominees for their strong academic backgrounds and professional qualifications.

Members noted that, beyond their credentials, the trio possessed extensive and proven public service experience, which they said made them ideal candidates for the positions.

At the close of the special sitting, speaker Katisya said the assembly had discharged its constitutional mandate and it was upon Malombe to formally appoint the approved nominees.

He reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to working closely with Malombe to ensure effective services and the successful implementation of development programmes in Kitui county.

Katisya said the assembly stood ready to expeditiously consider and approve future appointments to vacant positions to guarantee continuity in service delivery.

The speaker said the tenure of the current Kitui county public service board members is expected to expire early next year, urging the governor to initiate the replacement process in good time to avoid a leadership vacuum.

“We are aware the term of the current county public service board is expected to lapse in February or March next year. We appeal to the governor to fast-track the process of appointing new office bearers to avoid a vacuum,” Katisya said.
