The National Transport and Safety Authority has issued a clarification stating that the mandatory physical fitness tests for Public Service Vehicle and commercial drivers have not yet begun.
The agency said the tests, which are provided for under Section 105A of the Traffic Act, will only be implemented once an official framework is completed and formally communicated to the public.
“We assure the public that the rollout of the physical fitness tests and any related requirements will be announced through an official Public Notice and through the Authority’s official communication channels,” NTSA said.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NTSA said an exercise held in Nairobi on Tuesday was not part of the official rollout.
The event was organised by ENA Coach in partnership with its medical collaborators as part of ongoing voluntary health drives within the transport sector.
According to the Authority, similar medical outreach programmes have been carried out across the country by various transport operators and institutions.
These include school transport providers and entities such as Vivo Energy Kenya, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Red Cross, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, NACADA, St. John Ambulance, AA Kenya, Equity Afya, Eldoret Hospital, Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital, Karen Hospital and City Eye Hospital.
NTSA added that it is working with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to develop a national medical assessment framework that will guide the implementation of the physical fitness requirement.
The framework is expected to outline standards for testing and the responsibilities of drivers, employers, and medical examiners.
The clarification followed ENA Coach conducted a comprehensive eye examination for its drivers in partnership with Maxxis Kenya and Specsales Opticians.
The company said the exercise was aimed at improving safety for passengers and other road users. Samuel Musumba, the NTSA Programme Director, attended the event.
The ENA coach said such health screenings help ensure that its drivers meet the visual and physical standards required for long-distance travel.
The company also noted that the initiative aligns with broader efforts within the transport industry to enhance safety and reduce road crashes.
NTSA is expected to issue further guidance once the medical framework is completed.
